ETA’s Mission

Since its founding in 1929 as the National Thespian Society, the Educational Theatre Association has worked to promote and strengthen theatre arts programs in the educational system.  ETA carries out this work through two constituent organizations:

  •  The International Thespian Society, which concentrates primarily on providing services for high school students and their teachers through Thespian and Junior Thespian Troupes, and
  •  The Educational Theatre Association, a professional association for educators and artists working with theatre education in kindergarten through secondary grades.
Thespian Troupe #5440 was chartered in September, 1995. The Troupe was honored with the National Outstanding School Award from the Educational Theatre Association in 2000 and again in 2005. In 2004 Troupe #5440 – along with the Troupes from Coffman and Jerome – received the National Community Spirit Award from the Educational Theatre Association. Troupe #5440 had the honor of producing the National Outstanding Thespian, Matt Troillett, in 2005, the National Melba Day Henning Educational Theatre Association Scholarship winner, Spenser Morris, in 2007 and the only student from the state of Ohio to be selected for the 2008 National Thespian production of Hairspray, Kelsey Korona, in 2007.
